Your Hobby Makes You a Better Employee!

During the spring I am often outside early in the morning. The weather is beautiful, and it is spring migration! I head out to watch the incredible variety of birds that visit my yard on their journey north. I consider myself an “okay” birder—improving a bit each year, which is a nice reward, though not my main motivation. The thrill comes from the challenge of identifying the birds.

The experience of being outdoors, watching the birds, brings me back to my center.

One of the most immediate benefits of a hobby is stress reduction. Whether it’s hiking, playing an instrument, gardening, or woodworking, engaging in a fulfilling activity allows you to mentally recharge. Time spent doing something enjoyable helps reset the nervous system, lowers stress hormones like cortisol, and creates a sense of satisfaction and balance. People who are mentally refreshed tend to be more resilient and better equipped to handle workplace pressures.

Many hobbies also build skills that directly benefit the workplace:

  • Team sports improve communication and collaboration.

  • Art sharpens problem-solving and attention to detail.

  • Outdoor challenges like hiking or climbing enhance decision-making and perseverance.

  • Musical pursuits strengthen discipline and focus.

Stepping outside of your daily routine to pursue a hobby also fosters creativity. These activities give your mind space to wander, encouraging fresh perspectives and unexpected connections—traits that are essential in today’s workplace that values innovation.

Finally, progress and success in a hobby build self-confidence. Whether it’s mastering a tough song or completing a DIY project, those wins reinforce a sense of personal competence. And that confidence often spills over into professional life, inspiring greater initiative and a willingness to grow on the job.

Hobbies help people bring their best selves to work. A workplace that supports employees’ personal interests, is often repaid with a more loyal, engaged, and satisfied employee.

I hope that you have a personal hobby that brings you joy and helps you find your quiet center. Nurturing your well-being through a meaningful hobby benefits you and those around you.
